When They See Us is a docuseries created, co-written and directed by Ava DuVernay that aired exclusively on Netflix on May 31, 2019.

Recalling the events of the 1989 Central Park jogger case, the series explored the lives of the five suspects – Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise, and Raymond Santana – and their families up to 2014, when they received a $40 million settlement from the city of New York in a lawsuit filed for wrongful convictions and emotional distress.

The five protagonists of the series were convicted by juries on charges of rape, assault, and related sexual crimes enacted on Trisha Meili in two separate trials during 1990. After nearly 13 years in prison, the assailant finally confessed to his wrongdoings as DNA evidence caused the courts to vacate the convictions of the Central Park Five.

The injustice of the Criminal Justice System

The central theme of When They See us explores racial prejudice and generalization amongst a long-crooked United States criminal justice system. Since all five men were exonerated in 2002, their case highlighted police coercion tactics on young minorities, the youth’s vulnerability to make false confessions, and the dangers imposed by media bias, agenda-setting, and racial profiling.
