The first time I ever heard about Kobe Bean Bryant was when I became a student of the game around 2007 and decided Lebron James would be my favorite basketball player. While 2007 seems like a faint memory, my recollection is vivid as my friends and I would roll up paper balls, back each other down, and yell “KOBE” as we shoot a fadeaway jumper in the garbage can.

It was then that I fell in love with the game of basketball and the world of sports in general.

In the eyes of many basketball fans, Kobe was the closest thing to the GOAT (Michael Jordan) that we may ever see in this lifetime. During my early adolescence, my homies and I would argue with and antagonize each other about our favorite players winning and losing basketball games and individual awards. Too young to remember the battles Kobe and Shaq endured with and against each other – internally – I am old enough to remember the Lakers’ back-to-back titles between 2009-2010 when he was considered the best player in basketball.

I was forced to hang up a lot of phone calls because my ears were getting screamed off about Kobe’s greatness and Lebron’s failure to hold up his end of the deal and clash with Bryant in the finals.

Unfortunately, the world is forced to grieve in remembrance of one of the greatest basketball players to grace the earth.

Former Lakers Superstar and Basketball Legend Kobe Bryant was pronounced dead yesterday along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant in a helicopter accident in Calabasas, California that claimed nine lives. The legendary Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard was known around the world as a fierce competitor, hustler, father, husband, friend, and mentor.

Kobe Bryant was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13 overall pick in the NBA Draft and was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Vlade Divac. Bryant’s first few years in the NBA were coupled with rage and fury as he was eager to get on the court and prove that he belonged in the NBA as a high school prodigy electing to bypass college.

Bryant would soon unleash his talents over the course of his career as he was set to become a first-ballot NBA Hall of Famer this year. His NBA resume includes 18 NBA All-star appearances with five NBA championships and two Olympic goal medals. He was also a regular-season MVP and two-time NBA Finals MVP. Above all of his on-court accomplishments, Kobe is widely known for his record 81 points in a single game – coming second only to Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game.

In February of 2003, he put up one of the greatest scoring months of all time, tallying 40 or more points in nine consecutive games. Four years later, in March of 2007, he scored 50 or more points in four straight games.

While Bryant goes down in history as one of the greatest players to ever touch a basketball, he was determined to prove that he was a jack of all trades. He spearheaded the stereotype that athletes lose a sense of identity post-retirement. His once scrutinized epitomic arrogance led him to become a servant of the people and advocate for women in the basketball. Fathering four daughters, Bryant supported the WNBA like no superstar we’ve ever seen – which was largely attributed to his late daughter Gianna following in his footsteps on the basketball court.

Nonetheless, it was enlightening to watch Bryant embrace post-retirement and accept his role as an “OG” of NBA Basketball. Accustomed to the fire and rage he personified on the basketball court, many fans and players assumed he would eventually return to the game under the preconceived notions about him that developed during his career. People thought he was excessively competitive and selfish, but in all actuality,  he grandfathered many of today’s NBA players who look to him for advice.

Admittingly, Bryant’s drive and will to succeed at everything he does inspire me. More importantly, Bryant was addicted to storytelling and spearheaded that genre with the same intensity he spearheaded basketball.

He would go on to make history and become the first champion professional athlete – and the first African American to win the award for best animated short film entitled “Dear Basketball,” showing love and gratitude for the game he dedicated over half of his life to.

Bryant told sports reporters that winning an Oscar was better than winning the NBA title.

“I heard a lot of people tell me, ‘What are you going to do when you retire?’ I want to be a writer and a storyteller,” Bryant said. “ I got a lot of, “That’s cute.’ I got that a lot. To be here right now and have a sense of validation, this is crazy.”

Watching Kobe achieve success in writing and narrating – a field I have expressed my deepest passion and fire for – has inspired me on insurmountable levels. For the majority of my adolescence, however, I was praying for Kobe to fall short of success on the basketball court in hopes of being on the arrogant end of phone calls. Unfortunately, Kobe humbled me in friendly competition.

Kobe demanded the best out of himself and disproved the opinions of others, which is why it’s so hard for everyone to believe he left this earth. The uncertainty of life – a component of life that remains undefeated – struck Kobe and taught a valuable lesson to mankind: live life to the fullest because it is unpredictable in nature. Express your deepest gratitude to the people in your life because they can be here today and gone within the following 24 hours.
